2005 Toyota Avalon Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the Engine Control Module (ECM) on 2005 Toyota Avalon?
A: The first step for Engine Control Module (ECM) replacement requires disconnecting the cable connected to the negative battery terminal. The Front door scuff plate on the right side along with the RH cowl side trim sub-assembly and instrument panel under cover sub-assembly No.2 and the glove compartment door assembly should be taken out. Begin replacement by disconnecting the 5 connectors while you remove 2 nuts along with the bolt and ECM from its position. After that separate the ECM bracket and ECM bracket No.2 through their corresponding 2 screws. To install the ECM begin by screwing ECM bracket No.2 to ECM using two screws while installing ECM bracket with another two screws before bolting the ECM with two nuts and a bolt and finally set torque to 5.5 N.m (56 kgf.cm, 49 in.lbf). Refasten all five ECM connectors before plugging back the cable to the negative battery post. Completion of the installation process requires fitting the glove compartment door assembly followed by the instrument panel under cover sub-assembly No.2 and cowl side trim sub-assembly RH together with the front door scuff plate RH. The system requires memory reset and initialization steps after disconnection of the battery terminal according to the specific system needs.
