2005 Scion tC Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to replace the PARK/NEUTRAL SAFETY SWITCH ASSEMBLY (ATM) on 2005 Scion tC?
A: The repair process for replacing the PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH ASSEMBLY (ATM) starts by removing the engine under cover LH. You must disconnect the transmission control cable assembly by first removing the nut from the control shaft lever then disconnecting the control cable from the lever and taking out the clip which allows you to disconnect the cable from the bracket. After you disconnect the park/neutral position switch connector you need to remove the nut along with washer and control shaft lever and raise the lock plate to expose the manual valve shaft nut and lock plate. Start the process by taking out the two bolts before extracting the park/neutral position switch. A new park/neutral position switch must first be attached to the manual valve shaft before its two bolts should be installed temporarily and a new lock plate should be placed and the nut should be tightened to 6.9 Nm (70 kgf-cm, 61 inch lbs). After temporarily placing the control shaft lever it must be turned counterclockwise until it stops then turned clockwise two notches before removing the lever. Next position the switch on the neutral basic line before tightening the two bolts to 5.4 Nm (55 kgf-cm, 48 inch lbs). Start by using a screwdriver to secure the lock plate nut but then add the control shaft lever with washer and nut and finally apply torque of 13 Nm (130 kgf-cm, 10 ft. lbs.) and join the park/neutral position switch connector. You should fix the transmission control cable assembly so that you can position the control cable with its clip onto the bracket before hooking up the cable to the control shaft lever through the nut. The procedure ends with reinstalling engine under cover LH after verifying shift lever position together with the park/neutral position switch assembly inspection.
