2004 Toyota Prius Wiper Motor Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to replace the windshield wiper motor assembly on 2004 Toyota Prius?
A: Start the windshield wiper motor assembly replacement procedure by removing front wiper arm head caps then moving to front wiper arm LH that requires removal of 2 nuts. Detaching the windshield wiper arm RH nut is required to complete its removal. Unclip the 8 fasteners to remove the hood to cowl top seal while dismounting the cowl top ventilator louver on the LH side by removing its 8 claws alongside one clip then repeat the process for the RH side. Separate the connector while removing the five bolts to extract the windshield wiper motor assembly together with its link system. Disassemble the telescopically linked connection between the wiper link arm and crank arm pivot by using a flathead screwdriver which has been taped at the tip. First remove the nut and washer followed by the crank arm assembly with careful marking of the positions between both components and the windshield wiper motor assembly. Follow the steps to remove three bolts that will separate the windshield wiper motor assembly. To install the windshield wiper motor assembly to the windshield wiper link assembly use 3 bolts which need to be torqued to 5.4 Nm (55 kgf.cm, 48 in.lbf). Following nut and washer assembly of the crank arm you must position the matchmarks correctly before applying 17 Nm (175 kgf.cm, 13 ft.lbf) torque to it. Next apply MP grease to the crank arm pivot and then install the windshield wiper link arm. The windshield wiper motor & link assembly needs to be reconnected through 5 bolts which require 5.5 Nm (56 kgf.cm, 49 in.lbf) torque and connector reattachment. Round files should be used to clean the serrations on front wiper arm LH and RH while wire brushes should clean the wiper pivot serrations. Secure the left-hand front wiper arm by tightening the nut on its location and adjust the wiper blade until it is correctly aligned before torquing to 21 Nm (214 kgf.cm, 15 ft.lbf) while maintaining pressure on the arm hinge. You should now install the second nut in each front wiper arm RH before tightening it to 21 Nm (214 kgf.cm, 15 ft.lbf). End the procedure by activating the wipers as you spray washer fluid and water on the windshield to determine if wiper operation functions correctly and does not affect any body components.
