2004 Toyota Matrix Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to overhaul the Clutch Master Cylinder on 2004 Toyota Matrix?
A: The Clutch Master Cylinder needs a overhaul which starts from draining clutch fluid followed by removing brake master cylinder sub-assembly and brake booster assembly. Discharge the clutch reservoir fluid by removing its clip to feed it into a collecting vessel. The Special Service Tool 09023-00100 helps disconnect the flexible hose tube between clutch master cylinder by placing drained fluid in a container. Remove the clutch pedal spring while keeping it from turning upside down. After that remove the clutch master cylinder push rod clevis with hole pin by taking out the hole clip and pin. Unglue the two nuts resisting the clutch master cylinder assembly removal. The clutch master cylinder kit installation starts with the slotted spring pin removal using a pin punch and hammer followed by removal of the inlet union and grommet then loosening the lock nut and removing the clevis and taking off the lock nut from the push rod until completing the boot removal from the cylinder body. Push the push rod forward to enable snap ring pliers' removal of the snap ring before taking out the push rod from the cylinder body with care needed because the piston typically comes out. First install the cylinder body without damaging its inner components by removing the piston with spring and stop plate from the push rod. The installation of clutch master cylinder requires lithium soap base glycol grease for coating parts before assembling the piston with spring into the cylinder while attaching the stop plate to the push rod to finally install the push rod into the cylinder body. Keep pushing the push rod as you install the snap ring using snap ring pliers before you put on the boot to the cylinder body and the lock nut to the push rod. The clevis assembly including the locknut should be inserted to the push rod while temporary. At this time install the inlet union with new grommet before driving the slotted spring pin through with a pin punch and hammer. The clutch master cylinder assembly requires two nut installation before torquing the nuts to 11.8 Nm (120 kgf-cm, 9 ft. lbs.). Install the hole pin from the right side of the vehicle during the installation of the clutch pedal sub-assembly to the clevis using MP grease on the contact surfaces. Subsequently attach the hole pin to the clevis bush then install a clip onto it. The clutch master cylinder attachment to the flexible hose tube requires Special Service Tool: 09023-00100 while you tighten it to 15.2 Nm (155 kgf-cm, 11 ft. lbs.). Connect the clutch reservoir tube with the clip at the clutch master cylinder assembly and position the white mark in an upward direction. The brake booster assembly joins with the brake master cylinder sub-assembly while the brake line and clutch pipe line requires fluid bleeding through the brake reservoir tank filled with clutch fluid. Complete the clutch pipe line torque at 8.4 Nm (85 kgf-cm, 73 inch lbs.) before checking brake height adjustment and examining clutch pedal operation and making fluid leak inspections of the clutch and brake systems. Also monitor the fluid levels within the reservoir.
