2004 Toyota Matrix Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the Vacuum Brake Booster on 2004 Toyota Matrix?
A: The first step to replace the Vacuum Brake Booster requires draining brake fluid followed by immediate surface paint cleaning of any spillage. Begin by removing the air cleaner element while taking out the 3 bolts which hold the air cleaner case sub-assy and the air cleaner cap sub-assy. The first step involves removing the brake master cylinder sub-assy before disconnecting the brake master cylinder push rod clevis. The lock nut requires loosening before removing the clip together with the clevis pin and wave washer. The actuator assembly of cruise control needs removal when two nuts and a bolt are removed first before placing it aside. Using Special Service Tool 09023-00100 together with a spanner disconnect the brake tube from the flexible hose before sliding the clip to detach the vacuum hose. First separate the 2 or 3 brake tubes at the clamp then take out the 4 nuts along with clevis before extracting the brake booster with its gasket. Install the clevis to the booster push rod after which position the new gasket along with the brake booster using the 4 nuts then torque them to 12.7 Nm (130 kgf-cm, 9 ft. lbs.). Finally secure the brake tubes to their clamp and route the vacuum hose towards the brake booster. The connection between brake tube and flexible hose should be established using Special Service Tool: 09023-00100 and a spanner under a torque of 15.2 Nm (155 kgf-cm, 11 ft. lbs.). The cruise control actuator assembly requires installation with 2 nuts and 1 bolt while torque settings remain at 43 Nm (438 kgf-cm, 32 ft. lbs.) alongside the front wheel LH torquing at 103 Nm (1,050 kgf-cm, 76 ft. lbs.). An operating procedure requires the brake master cylinder push rod clevis to receive lithium soap base glycol grease on its clevis pin followed by attachment with the pin and wave washer and clip. The brake master cylinder sub-assy installation process should be followed by the air cleaner case sub-assy, secured with 3 bolts then the air cleaner element can be returned. The conclusion of the installation involves attaching the air cleaner cap sub-assy followed by filling the reservoir with brake fluid then using Special Service Tool: 09023-00100 to bleed the master cylinder before bleaching the brake line and verifying proper brake pedal height and free play as well as reserve distance and reservoir fluid level and inspecting brake fluid leakage.
