2004 Toyota Land Cruiser Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the water pump on 2004 Toyota Land Cruiser?
A: Service and repair of the water pump requires the draining of engine coolant first. The first step should be timing belt and No.2 idler pulley removal. Separate the water bypass hose from the water inlet housing before unscrewing the two bolts which keep the water inlet housing on the water pump. Separate the water inlet housing from the front water bypass joint until you can remove the water inlet and inlet housing assembly and its accompanying O-ring from the water inlet housing. To remove the water pump begin by taking out the five bolts, two stud bolts, nut and water pump and gasket followed by removing the O-ring from the water bypass pipe. The inspection of a water pump for coolant leakage requires examination of both the air hole and water hole; any detected leakage necessitates water pump and timing belt replacement. A smooth and noiseless water pump bearing operation with pulley rotation indicates good condition but a replacement will be needed if the bearing performs poorly. The installation requires engineers to apply soapy water on a new O-ring placed on the water bypass pipe end before uniting the water pump to this end. Install the water pump with new gasket and utilize 5 bolts as well as 2 stud bolts and a nut. Tighten all fasteners evenly across multiple sequences to reach a bolt torque of 21 Nm but only achieve 18 Nm torque for the stud bolts and nuts while using 35 mm length bolts. The subsequent step requires removing FIPG material use from both water inlet housing and water pump contact points because scattered oil needs exclusion. Seal packing (Part No. 08826-00100 or equivalent) should be applied to the water inlet housing sealing groove by using a 2 - 3 mm nozzle opening while the parts remain assembled for not more than 5 minutes. Connect the front end of the water inlet housing to the front water bypass joint hole following soapy water application on the new O-ring in that component. The installer must torque the water inlet and housing assembly bolts with a sequence between tightenings until they reach 18 Nm. The installation of the No.2 idler pulley and timing belt follows engine coolant filling then starting the engine for leak and coolant level tests. The bolt lengths for A and B measure 76 mm and 22 mm.
