2004 Toyota Land Cruiser Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service the thermostat on 2004 Toyota Land Cruiser?
A: Service of the thermostat starts with draining the engine coolant. The removal of three nuts will disconnect the water inlet from its housing. Next remove the thermostat unit while discarding its gasket. Heat water in a tank and place the thermostat inside to check that it opens between 80 - 84 degrees Celsius (176 - 183 degrees Fahrenheit); replace the current thermostat if the value is incorrect. The inspection requires checking that the valve lift reaches 10 mm (0.39 inch) when water reaches 95 degrees Celsius (203 degrees Fahrenheit) while the thermostat requires complete closure when the temperature drops below 40 degrees Celsius(104 degrees Fahrenheit); if any specifications fail, the thermostat needs replacement. Place a new gasket on the thermostat before you insert it into the water inlet housing with the straight upward direction of the jiggle valve providing a 30 degrees deviation distance. Install the water inlet by tightening its three nuts to 19 Nm (195 kgf-cm, 14 ft. lbs.). Check the engine performance with new coolant in the system before examining coolant leaks while verifying correct engine coolant capacity.
