2004 Toyota Highlander Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the camshaft on 2004 Toyota Highlander?
A: The procedure to replace the camshaft requires you to start by extracting the front wheel of the right side, front fender splash shield front right, front fender apron seal whose side is right, engine cover sub-assy No.1, ignition coil assembly, spark plug and ventilation hoses then proceed to the engine wire and cylinder head cover sub-assy and set the no. 1 cylinder at top dead center while in compression mode. Next remove chain tensioner assy No.1. Start by using a wrench to secure the No. 2 camshaft (exhaust) then loosen its sprocket bolt before removing the bearing cap bolts according to their specified order and removing all 5 caps. The procedure requires elevating the No. 2 camshaft (exhaust) before removing it and its sprocket bolt. Following this, disconnect the camshaft timing sprocket from the No. 2 camshaft (exhaust) while taking out the sprocket from the timing chain. Loosen the bearing cap bolts in a specified order before removing the caps of the camshaft (intake) to take out the camshaft while tying the timing chain with string to prevent items from dropping inside the timing chain cover. To remove the camshaft timing gear assembly fix the intake camshaft in a vise position the camshaft under a vinyl tape canopy with an exception on the advanced side path and apply 150 kPa (1.5 kgf/cm2, 21 psi) of compressed air to the advanced port edge while containing oil mist. Before proceeding with removal inspect how much the camshaft timing gear turns by hand on the advanced angle side. Remove only the fringe bolt from the camshaft timing gear without detaching any more of the 4 bolts. To install the camshaft timing gear assy properly the operator should match the gear to the straight pin and key groove then push the camshaft (intake) while rotating it until there is no space between the gear fringe and camshaft (intake) before tightening the bolt to 54 Nm (551 kgf-cm, 40 ft. lbs.). Continue by installing the timing chain to the camshaft timing gear which needs its painted mark to match the timing marks of the camshaft timing sprocket before installing the bearing caps and bolts according to a specified sequence of torque values. The No. 2 camshaft should align with the timing mark of the camshaft timing sprocket before a temporary sprocket bolt tightening. Next, position bearing caps and bolts then tighten them according to specified torque values. The procedure ends with camshaft fixation by wrench then 54 Nm (551 kgf-cm, 40 ft. lbs.) bolting of the sprocket while avoiding valve lifter damage and verifying paint mark alignment (Step 7). Chain tensioner assy No.1 and cylinder head cover sub-assy installation follows along with engine wire connection and implementation of ignition coil assy (torque: 9.0 Nm (92 kgf-cm, 80 inch lbs.)) and spark plug installation (torque: 19 Nm (194 kgf-cm, 14 ft. lbs.)),install front wheel RH, and check for engine oil leaks.
