2004 Toyota Highlander Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to replace the LOWER BALL JOINT ASSY FRONT LH on 2004 Toyota Highlander?
A: Begin lower ball joint FRONT LH replacement by taking off both the front wheel and front axle hub LH nut using Tool 09930-00010 special service piece. Afterward take out the speed sensor front LH then the front disc brake caliper assembly LH along with the front disc. Install Special Service Tool: 09628-62011 to detach the tie rod end sub-assembly LH from the assembly. Afterwards, remove the front suspension arm sub-assembly lower No.1 LH and take off the front axle assembly LH. Before taking out the lower ball joint assembly front LH, you must remove the castle nut and cotter pin then use Special Service Tool: 09628-62011. Check the lower ball joint front LH device through 5-steps of rotating the ball joint stud then tighten the nut with a torque wrench at 3-5 seconds per turn until the fifth torque reading shows values between 0.98 to 3.43 Nm (10 to 35 kgf-cm, 8.7 to 30 inch lbs.). Put the lower ball joint assembly front LH to the steering knuckle with the castle nut and spin it by hand at 3 to 5 seconds per turn until torque reaches 123 Nm. Protect the screw threads and conical surface from oil contact during this step. Put fresh pin through the steering knuckle then tighten the nut to 60° when hole positions are separate from each other. Position the front axle assembly LH and sub-assembly components including lower No.1 LH suspension arm and tie rod end assembly along with the front disc, disc brake caliper assembly, and speed sensor front LH. Install the hub LH nut with precise torque of 76 ft. lbs. (103 Nm, 1,050 kgf-cm). After aligning the front wheel and inspecting the ABS speed sensor check the results.
