2004 Toyota Highlander Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the ABS Control Module on 2004 Toyota Highlander?
A: Before repair of the brake actuator assembly the negative terminal of the battery needs to be disconnected and all brake fluid requires draining. Any fluid touching painted surfaces needs prompt cleaning. The brake actuator with bracket removal requires the use of Special Service Tool: 09023-00100 to disconnect 6 brake tubes allowing tagging or noting their reconnect positions before pulling the lock lever upward to disconnect the actuator connector and removing the 2 bolts and nut and the actuator and bracket while carefully avoiding damage to brake tubes and wire harness. The brake actuator assembly requires removal from the brake actuator bracket by unbolted the two nuts. The installation process starts with using torque wrenches to fasten the brake actuator assembly with 2 nuts that receive a torque of 5.4 Nm (55 kgf-cm, 48 in.-lbf). Then, install the actuator with bracket through 2 bolts along with a nut, which should be torqued to 19 Nm (194 kgf-cm, 14 ft-lbf), while paying attention to the brake tubes and wire harness. Apply Special Service Tool: 09023-00100 to connect each brake tube to its proper position on the actuator with bracket before torquing them to a value of 15 Nm (155 kgf-cm, 11 ft-lbf). The brake fluid reservoir needs refilling while using Special Service Tool: 09023-00100 to bleed the master cylinder followed by bleeding the brake line and finishing with bleeding the brake actuator assembly. Bleed the master cylinder system through Special Service Tool: 09023-00100 to ensure the correct fluid level in the reservoir before reuniting the negative terminal of the battery. The last steps include running a yaw rate sensor zero point calibration test followed by checking the brake actuator performance with a hand-held tester.
