2004 Toyota Corolla Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the Clock Spring Sub-Assy on 2004 Toyota Corolla?
A: The replacement of Clock Spring Sub-Assy begins by disconnecting the battery negative terminal followed by adjusting the front wheel to face a straight position. Use Special Service Tool: 09950-50013 (09951-05010, 09952-05010, 09953-05020, 09954-05021) to remove first the horn button assembly and the steering wheel assembly before proceeding to the steering column cover. To begin the replacement process disconnect the Air Bag connector and the connector from the clock spring sub-assy before releasing the 3 claws. The clock spring sub-assy must undergo a thorough examination to check for any scratches or connector cracks and dents along with chipping damage. When these conditions appear, install a brand-new replacement cable. You should install the new clock spring sub-assy after setting the turn signal switch to neutral position and engaging the 3 claws while connecting the Air Bag connector. You should mount the steering column cover using three screws for installation. Begin cable centering by keeping the ignition switch in the OFF position and disconnecting the battery negative terminal for 90 seconds and turn the cable counterclockwise until resistance increases before continuing with clockwise turns equivalent to 2.5 turns to match the mark alignment. As a last step install the steering wheel assembly at 50 Nm (510 kgf.cm, 37 ft.lbf) torque while the horn button assembly needs 8.8 Nm (90 kgf.cm, 78 in.lbf) torque before both the horn button and warning light inspection.
