2004 Toyota Celica Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the power steering pump on 2004 Toyota Celica?
A: The PS vane pump rotating torque measurement should start with service and repair steps being completed according to specified parameters. Start the procedure by disassembling the suction port union through bolt removal together with its O-ring followed by removing the pressure port union and flow control valve and spring and O-ring from the pressure port union. The removal of the rear housing begins with detaching the oil pressure switch while replacing damaged components and following with removal of the rear bracket along with four bolts and an O-ring. The service process requires removing the cam ring followed by extraction of 10 vane plates and vane pump rotor culminating in removal of the side plate. The technician must handle the vane plates with care and employ the use of a screwdriver to remove the snap ring and rotor at the same time taking out both O-rings from the side plate. The technician must extract the vane pump shaft together with its vane pump pulley. The inspection of the oil clearance between vane pump shaft and bushing must use micrometer and caliper gauge measurements that keep the value of 0.021 - 0.043 mm (0.0008 - 0.0017 inch) within standard while staying under 0.07 mm (0.0028 inch). A value exceeding maximum requires front housing and vane pump shaft replacement. Check the vane pump rotor and vane plates through height and thickness and length measurements to validate they conform to the prescribed measurements at 7.6 mm (0.299 inch), 1.405 mm (0.0553 inch), and 11.993 mm (0.4722 inch). Measure the clearance between the vane pump rotor groove and vane plate with a measurement tool; replace the vane plate or rotor whenever the measurement exceeds 0.03 mm (0.0012 inch) along with replacing it with components if they have matching stamps (0, 1, 2, 3, or 4) applied to the cam ring. The inspection of the flow control valve requires application of power steering fluid followed by testing its entry into the valve hole while applying 392 - 490 kPa compressed air through the opposite side hole; a replacement valve should bear the marks A, B, C, D, E, or F. Free spring length measurement needs to measure at least 35.8 mm (1.409 inch) with vernier calipers. The installation of an oil seal requires careful use of a screwdriver with vinyl tape followed by power steering fluid coating on the new seal lip then execution with Special Service Tool: 09950-60010 (09951-00280), 09950-70010 (09951-07100) while observing correct installation direction. Reinstall the vane pump shaft together with the vane pump pulley and place the side plate with two new O-rings that have fluid coating while ensuring both components are aligned with the front housing. The cam ring must be placed into position with its dent in line and with the inscribed mark situated outward and then the vane pump rotor with its mark facing outward and featuring a new snap ring must be installed. Follow this sequence to put the assembly together: first place ten vane plates with round ends facing outward then slide the rear housing on with fresh fluid-coated O-ring and adjust the straight pin to match dents before securing bolts at 22 Nm torque and proceeding to attach the rear bracket with a 44 Nm bolt. Place the oil pressure switch at 21 Nm (210 kgf-cm, 15 ft. lbs.) and then add the spring and flow control valve oriented properly followed by the pressure port union with a new O-ring that received fluid coat at 69 Nm (700 kgf-cm, 51 ft. lbs.) after which put the suction port union with a new O-ring at 12 Nm (120 kgf-cm, 9 ft. lbs.). Measure the PS vane pump rotating torque as the last step of the procedure.
