2004 Toyota Camry Timing Belt Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to replace the timing belt on 2004 Toyota Camry?
A: To replace the timing belt, begin by removing the front wheel RH, front fender apron seal RH, V (cooler compressor to crankshaft pulley) belt No.1, vane pump V belt, engine moving control rod, engine mounting stay No.2 RH, generator bracket No.2, and crankshaft pulley using Special Service Tool: 09213-54015 (91651-60855), 09330-00021 to loosen the pulley bolt and Special Service Tool: 09950-50013 (09951-05010, 09952-05010, 09953-05010, 09954-05030) to remove it, ensuring to apply lubricating oil on the threads and tip of the center bolt 100 before use. The procedure begins with removing the engine wire protector clamps to take off 5 bolts then remove timing belt guide No.2 and engine mounting bracket RH, timing belt No.1 cover, timing belt No.2 cover and the timing belt itself. Next, set the No. 1 cylinder to TDC/compression to temporarily install the crankshaft pulley bolt with the washer while turning the crankshaft clockwise to align timing marks before checking the camshaft timing pulleys alignment. To reuse the timing belt maintain its original installation marks until measurement or mark them you will use for reference before removing it. Set the No. 1 cylinder to approximately 60° BTDC/compression position. Set the No. 1 cylinder to TDC/compression at approximately 60° BTDC before removing the belt tensioner without activating its plunger due to the necessity for proper crankshaft pulley orientation. The installation of the new timing belt requires preventing any activity that would involve bending or twisting or contact with oil water or steam and maintaining clean pulleys. Install the crankshaft pulley bolt together with its washer followed by turning the crankshaft counterclockwise to about 60° while using Special Service Tool: 09960-10010 (09962-01000, 09963-01000) to correctly position the timing marks. The timing belt installation requires alignment of the front mark toward the front with the installation marks matching the pulley timing marks. Press in the push rod of the timing belt tensioner assembly using less than 9.8 kN (1,000 kgf, 2,205 lbs) force and line up the holes before securing it with two bolts at 27 Nm (280 kgf-cm, 20 ft. lbs.). Then check the timing marks after two crankshaft clockwise turns. The work proceeds with timing belt guide No.2 facing engine front and engine mounting bracket RH receiving torque of 28 Nm (286 kgf-cm, 21 ft. lbs.). Afterward, install timing belt No.2 cover with timing belt No.1 cover at 8.5 Nm (87 kgf-cm, 76 inch lbs.) yet be mindful to maintain gasket integrity. Prefinal installation adds the engine wire protector cover. Place the set key correctly then use Special Service Tools 09213-54015 (91651-60855), 09330-00021 at 220 Nm (2250 kgf-cm, 162 ft. lbs.) to install the pulley bolt while proceeding with installation of generator bracket No.2 at 28 Nm (286 kgf-cm, 21 ft. lbs.), engine mounting stay No.2 RH, engine moving control rod, vane pump V belt, V (cooler compressor to crankshaft pulley) belt No.1, inspect drive belt tension, and reinstall the front wheel RH.
