2004 Toyota Camry Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to replace the Engine Control Module (ECM) on 2004 Toyota Camry?
A: The replacement of the Engine Control Module (ECM) begins with terminating power at the battery negative terminal. Begin by disassembling the front door scuff plate on the right-hand side (RH) and the cowl side trim sub-assy on the RH. Additionally, remove instrument panel under cover sub-assy No.1 and instrument panel sub-assy lower from the vehicle. The next stage involves removing the ECM by disconnecting five ECM connectors and removing the 2 wire harness clamps as well as the 2 ECM nuts. The procedure begins with ECM bracket removal through screw removal of its 2 screws followed by a similar process to eliminate ECM bracket No.2. The installation of ECM bracket No.2 requires two screws while the ECM bracket gets fastened using the same two screws. Attach the 2 wire harness clamps, join all 5 ECM connectors, then tighten the 2 mounting nuts of the ECM with 5.5 N.m (56 kgf.cm, 49 in.lbf) torque. Reinstallation of instrument panel sub-assy lower and instrument panel under cover sub-assy No.1 completes the procedure followed by installation of cowl side trim sub-assy RH and front door scuff plate RH before reconnecting the battery negative terminal.
