2004 Toyota Avalon Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to service and repair the Shock Absorber on 2004 Toyota Avalon?
A: The service and repairs for suspension strut start after removing the rear seat and rear wheel where the wheel needs a torque setting of 103 Nm (1,050 kgf-cm, 76 ft. lbs.). The maintenance of the flexible hose and ABS speed sensor wire harness starts with removing the two bolts to detach both components. The flexible hose needs a torque of 29 Nm (300 kgf-cm, 22 ft. lbs.) and the ABS speed sensor wire harness requires 5.4 Nm (55 kgf-cm, 48 inch lbs.). Remove the shock absorber along with its coil spring by unscrewing 2 lower side nuts which must be torqued to 196 Nm for reused nuts and 255 Nm for new nuts. Engine oil must be applied to threads during installation. Support the rear axle carrier with a jack then remove the cap and loosen the center suspension support nut to 49 Nm (500 kgf-cm, 36 ft-lbs) without untightening it. Disassembling the shock absorber requires loosening this nut but failure to disassemble the shock absorber does not need nut loosening. To remove the shock absorber with the coil spring you must first lower the rear axle carrier and unscrew the 2 bolts from the shock absorber's lower side and remove the 3 suspension support nuts torqued to 39 Nm. To install the system follow the removal process backward then verify the rear wheel alignment.
