2004 Toyota Avalon Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the A/C Clutch on 2004 Toyota Avalon?
A: Prior to servicing and fixing the compressor clutch run the engine at idle speed with A/C activated for 10 minutes before stopping the engine and disconnecting the negative (-) terminal from the battery. Discharge all refrigerant from the system and disconnect the drive belt before removing the 2 nuts from the discharge and suction hoses to cap the open ends for preventing moisture or dirt entry. The generator removal process starts with disconnecting its connector and removing the nut and wire before disconnecting the wire harness from the clamp to remove the pivot bolt and adjusting lock bolt and generator. Begin the compressor removal process by disconnecting its connector followed by removing the wire harness clamp then unfasten the 2 bolts, nut and drive belt adjusting bar bracket. After that install the 3 bolts which secure the compressor. Begin by installing the compressor first with three nuts that require a torque setting of 25 N.m (250 kgf.cm, 18 ft.lbf) before moving on to installing the generator drive belt adjusting bar bracket which needs 2 bolts with a nut tightened to 18 N.m (185 kgf.cm, 13 ft.lbf) on Bolt (A) together with a torque of 25 N.m (250 kgf.cm, 18 ft.lbf) for Bolt (B) and the nut. Place the generator onto the bracket using the pivot bolt along with the adjusting lock bolt but do not tighten them. Then connect the generator connector followed by securing the generator wire with the nut. To install the discharge and suction hoses users need to apply a torque of 10 N.m (100 kgf.cm, 7 ft.lbf) while using bolt and nut connections and must apply oil to two new O-rings with compressor oil before final installation. The drive belt must be installed along with negative terminal cable battery reconnect and evacuation of air from the refrigeration system followed by charging it with 600 plus or minus 50 g (21.16 plus or minus 1.76 oz.) of refrigerant. To finish the process utilize a gas leak detector for examination of refrigerant loss while checking joint torques whenever leakage occurs followed by A/C functionality tests.
