2004 Scion xB Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to replace the Crankshaft Seal on 2004 Scion xB?
A: The process to replace the engine rear oil seal requires starting with M/T transaxle manual transaxle assembly followed by separation of A/T transaxle automatic transaxle assembly and M/T transaxle clutch cover assembly and clutch disc assembly. Start by detaching the drive plate combined with ring gear or flywheel through the procedure of holding the crankshaft damper with Special Service Tool: 0921-58012 (91111-50845), 09330-00021. Prune the engine rear oil seal lip with a knife then extract it using a tape-wrapped screwdriver before investigating the crankshaft for damage followed by polishing rough areas with 400-grit sandpaper if present. Assemble the new oil seal with multipurpose grease on its lip while keeping the material area clean before using Special Service Tool: 09223-56010 with a hammer to insert the oil seal until it reaches the rear oil seal retainer edge at a perpendicular angle then wipe away any surplus grease. Reinstall the drive plate and ring gear or flywheel by holding the crankshaft with Special Service Tool: 09213-58012 (91111-50845), 09330-00021, applying adhesive (Part No. 0933-00070, THREE BOND or equivalent) to the cleaned bolts, and tightening the 6 bolts uniformly in the specified sequence to a torque of 88 Nm (900 kgf-cm, 65 ft. lbs.) for the drive plate (A/T) or 49 Nm (500 kgf-cm, 36 ft. lbs.) for the flywheel (M/T), ensuring not to reuse the flywheel bolts and marking each with paint before retightening by an additional 90 degrees in the same sequence and checking the paint marks. The end step includes putting back the clutch disc assembly (M/T transaxle) and clutch cover assembly (M/T transaxle) and manual transaxle assembly (M/T transaxle) and automatic transaxle assembly (A/T transaxle) while inspecting for engine oil leakage.
