2004 Scion xA Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the Vacuum Brake Booster on 2004 Scion xA?
A: The first step to replace the Vacuum Brake Booster involves draining brake fluid before cleaning painted surfaces with immediate attention if the fluid attaches. Disassemble the air cleaner cap sub-assembly while disconnecting the clutch reservoir tube from M/T vehicles and extract the brake master cylinder by using Special Service Tool: 09023-00100. Start by disconnecting the vacuum hose by sliding a clip before you can remove the brake pedal return spring and clip and clevis pin along with loosening the push rod clevis lock nut so you can take out the four nuts followed by the push rod clevis before pulling out the brake booster assembly and gasket. The installation requires you to set the new brake booster assembly along with its gasket using the four nuts and push rod clevis. Apply 13 Nm (130 kgf-cm, 9 ft. lbs.) torque when fastening. Subsequently, apply lithium soap base glycol grease to the clevis pin, install the clip and clevis pin, add the brake pedal return spring and reconnect the vacuum hose. Inspect and adjust the brake booster push rod under no vacuum conditions by performing several brake pedal depressions when the engine is off. Measure the cleareonce between the push rod and tool while using chalk on the accessory tool using measurements of 0 mm (0 inches). The brake pedal should be sufficiently depressed when using Special Service Tool: 09023-00100 to adjust the length of the protruding adjusting bolt and fix the push rod. First fill the brake reservoir with brake fluid and perform bleeding procedures on the master cylinder and brake line in addition to the clutch pipe line (M/T transaxle) before installing the brake actuator with bracket together with brake master cylinder and clutch reservoir tube (M/T transaxle) and air cleaner cap sub-assembly and battery. Finally check and adjust the brake pedal height, free play, reserve distance and fluid level in the reservoir as well as perform leakage tests and brake actuator validations with a hand-held tester.
