    A: A correct service procedure for an axle shaft starts by taking off the rear wheel, brake drum and gasket. Use a dial indicator to test bearing backlash which should not exceed 0.7 mm (0.028 inch) but if it does require a bearing replacement. Inspect the hub bolt surface of the axle shaft where the measurement must stay under 0.1 mm (0.004 inch) or replace the shaft. The ABS speed sensor needs uninstallation from the rear axle housing of vehicles that possess ABS technology. The next step requires using Special Service Tool: 09023-00100 to disconnect the brake line followed by disconnection of the parking brake cable through clip and pin removal. Carefully pull out the rear axle shaft assembly from the housing by removing its 4 mounting nuts at the backing plate while protecting the oil seal from damage. First extract the O-ring present within the rear axle housing. The first step consists of removing the bearing retainer and ABS speed sensor rotor through attachment of four serration bolts with nuts followed by hammer removal for treatment of the retainer and rotor surfaces. Place serration bolts along with washers and nuts back into position before properly torquening them. The replacement of the rear axle bearing requires Special Service Tools: 09223-56010, 09950-60010 (09951-00560) and 09515-30010, 09950-60020 (09951-00890). Proceed with installing a new outer side oil seal using Special Service Tool: 09950-60010 (09951-00610) together with 09950-70010 (09951-07150) and a hammer. To check the bearing case condition properly replace it while removing the outer side oil seal along with the bearing and serration bolts for installing new components. Momentum demands the replacement of the oil deflector that involves removing hub bolts and deflector and gasket application of a brass bar hammer sequences and adding new gasket with oil deflector installation through a washer and nut. Apply MP grease to the new outer side oil seal lip before installing the axis rear shaft using Special Service Tool: 09316-60011 (09316-00051) and a press tool. Seamly install a new snap ring through the use of an appropriate snap ring expander. To install the ABS speed sensor rotor and bearing retainer on vehicles equipped with ABS use Special Service Tool: 09316-60011 (09316-00051) and a press to achieve a standard length measurement of 122.2 plus or minus 1.0 mm (4.811 plus or minus 0.039 inch). Install the new inner side oil seal using Special Service Tool: 09308-00010 for removal then Special Service Tool: 09950-60020 (09951-00710), 09950-70010 (09951-07150) for installation while coating its lip with MID grease. A new O-ring goes on the rear axle housing before you install the rear axle shaft assembly which requires 69 Nm (700 kgf-cm, 51 ft. lbs. of torque). The brake line needs connection to the wheel cylinder through Special Service Tool: 09023-00100 while torquing it to 15 Nm (155 kgf-cm, 11 ft. lbs.). The installation of the rear brake assembly must include ABS speed sensor installation and torques to 8.0 Nm (82 kgf-cm, 71 ft. lbs.). Install a new gasket and brake drum then place the rear wheel before torquing it to 110 Nm (1,150 kgf-cm, 83 ft. lbs.). The brake system requires bleeding along with a signal check of the ABS speed sensor when ABS is present in the vehicle.
