    Q:
How to service and repair the rear axle shaft on Toyota Tundra? Posted by Customer
    A:
You need to start axle shaft maintenance by taking off the wheel before getting rid of the brake drum and its gasket. The service requires a dial indicator to check bearing backlash and axle shaft deviation while the maximum backlash tolerance is set at 0.7 mm (0.028 inch). Exceeding this limit demands a bearing replacement. The measurement of axle shaft surface deviation outside the hub bolt must not exceed 0.1 mm (0.004 inch) at this location. Replacing the axle shaft is necessary when this limit is breached. Roy the ABS speed sensor from the rear axle housing by unscrewing its housing bolt if your vehicle has ABS. Special Service Tool 09023-00101 allows removal of the brake line from the wheel cylinder before complete disassembly of the rear brake assembly. After brake line removal use the tool once again to disconnect the parking brake cable with its clip and pin. You should remove the rear axle shaft assembly from the rear axle housing after taking out four backing plate mounting nuts and carefully pulling the assembly to ensure no damage occurs to the oil seal before depriving the O-ring from the housing.
