2003 Toyota Tacoma Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to remove and install the Rack And Pinion on 2003 Toyota Tacoma?
A: The first step to remove the rack and pinion requires straightening the front wheels and then disconnecting the steering wheel pad and steering wheel. Start by removing the 4 engine under cover bolts and disconnecting both RH and LH tie rod ends together with the intermediate No. 2 shaft. Special Service Tool 09023-12700 should be used to disconnect pressure feed and return tubes before removing the PS rack and pinion assembly by removing the bolt and nut from the bracket followed by the 2 set bolts and nut. Remove the bracket as well as the grommet after taking out the PS rack and pinion assembly. Place the grommet and bracket first before installing the PS rack and pinion assembly so torque the set bolt "a" to 167 Nm (1,700 kgf-cm, 123 ft. lbs.), set bolt "b" with nut "b" to 191 Nm (1,950 kgf-cm, 141 ft. lbs.), and bolt "c" with nut "c" to 167 Nm (1,700 kgf-cm, 123 ft. lbs.). Use Special Service Tool: 09023-12700 to connect pressure feed and return tubes by applying 33 Nm (337 kgf-cm, 24 ft. lbs.) torque to the pressure feed tube while the return tube needs 36 Nm (365 kgf-cm, 26 ft. lbs.). The intermediate No. 2 shaft should be joined with the RH and LH tie rod ends before checking the front wheel alignment and centering the spiral cable for wheel installation. Begin by bolt the steering column main shaft to the wheel and tighten the wheel set nut just enough to connect the connector. Bleed the power steering system while performing a test of the steering wheel center point before setting the steering wheel set nut torque to 50 Nm (500 kgf-cm, 35 ft. lbs.) and installing the steering wheel pad and checking the front wheel alignment and engine under cover reinstallation by tighting its 4 bolts.
