2003 Toyota Prius Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the Rack And Pinion on 2003 Toyota Prius?
A: Begin rack and pinion servicing and repair by fixing the electric power rack and pinion assembly to a vise with Special Service Tool: 09612-00012 but avoid excessive force. The first step requires marking the tie rod ends before loosening their lock nuts to take them out alongside their respective tie rod ends then repeating this on opposite sides. The next step involves stripping away the RH and LH rack boots along with clamps and clips but preserve all components to ensure identification that avoids damaging the boots. When dealing with RH and LH rack ends you must unstake the claw washers using a screwdriver and hammer while protecting the rack and pinion then use Special Service Tool: 09922-10010 to remove the rack end by following illustrated directions. When the claw washer is extracted from the vehicle remove the earth wire by unscrewing its bolt. Reassembly occurs when you install the earth wire with the bolt which requires torque at 5.5 Nm (60 kgf-cm, 52 inch lbs.). Use new claw washers and start the rack ends but first align the claws through the rack and pinion grooves before torquing the rack end to 62 Nm (630 kgf-cm, 46 ft. lbs.) by using Special Service Tool: 09922-10010 according to the provided direction with a torque wrench that has a 380 mm (14.96 inch) fulcrum length. Fit a brass bar onto the claw washer before applying hammers but keep the impact away from the rack and pinion components while working on the second side as well. The rack and pinion hole requires a grease-free condition for RH and LH rack boots installation and their clips and clamps should be fitted without damaging or twisting the boot material. The last step involves clocking RH and LH tie rod ends together with their lock nuts and setting matchmarks while adjusting toe-in settings before executing the same steps on the other side.
