2003 Toyota Prius Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the fuel injector on 2003 Toyota Prius?
A: Service and repair of the fuel injector begins by removing the cylinder head cover followed by disconnecting the fuel tube from the fuel pipe while taking needed precautions to avoid fuel splashing because of pressure retention. The procedure requires disconnecting 4 injector connectors followed by removing 3 bolts to extract the delivery pipe and its 4 injectors and fuel pipe. Finally, a technician should remove two spacers and pull out the 4 injectors from the delivery pipe and discard the O-ring and grommet contained within each injector. When installing the grommet on each injector use spindle oil or gasoline to treat the new O-ring lightly before installation and apply the oil to the delivery pipe contact surface with the O-ring. Put the 4 injectors into position within the delivery pipes by turning them while providing downward force until their connectors face outward. Next, attach the 2 spacers to the cylinder head followed by installing delivery and fuel pipes combined with the 4 injectors. Kinds of testing should be performed on the delivery pipe and fuel pipe equipment through their temporary bolting cycle for smooth injector motions; an O-ring replacement or re-position is required if this test shows poor movement. Finish by applying torque of 19 N.m (194 kgf.cm, 14 ft.lbf) to the 2 delivery pipe bolts and 9.0 N.m (92 kgf.cm, 80 in.lbf) to the fuel pipe bolt. Connect the fuel tube to the fuel pipe by implementing proper safety measures before reconstructing the cylinder head cover. The procedure for removing the fuel delivery pipe involves releasing the fuel pipe clamp followed by extracting the metallic connector of the fuel tube assembly then setting up Special Service Tool: 09268-21010 at the connection to enable retainer alignment and connector advancement towards the tool. You need to perform the following steps for disconnecting the fuel tube connector: Clean the area where you work first then disconnect the connector manually and if you encounter resistance push the retainer lightly to remove it with your fingers before inspecting and cleaning the seal surface while covering the disconnected pipe and connector from damage.
