2003 Toyota Prius Throttle Body Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to service and repair the throttle body on 2003 Toyota Prius?
A: Service and repair operations for the throttle body begin with draining engine coolant followed by air cleaner assembly removal. Remove the connections of the throttle position sensor and throttle control motor together with the two PCV hoses and two water bypass hoses. Unfasten the bolt along with two nuts then discard the accelerator bracket and throttle body from the intake manifold at a torque level of 20 N.m (204 kgf.cm, 15 ft.lbf). The gasket of the throttle body needs removal during this process. The throttle position sensor should be handled gently before installation by the technician to extend its lifespan and prevent unexpected gear locking. Reinstall the throttle position sensor by inspecting the throttle valve opening angle at 3.5 degrees. Position the sensor 15 degrees right of position in the specifications before rotating it counter-clockwise to reach the throttle valve shaft point then torque the set screws together temporarily at 1.7 N.m (17.5 kgf.cm, 15 in.lbf). Use the Toyota hand-held tester at DLC3 to adjust the throttle position sensor by connecting its connector and turning the ignition switch ON while avoiding depressing the accelerator pedal. Watch the throttle valve opening percentage value under current data while adjusting the throttle position sensor position until the measurement reaches the center of the standard range at 14.8 plus or minus 0.8. The sensor must stay within the standard value after you torque down the screws. Check the throttle valve opening percentage using a screwdriver until the percentage stays within 10-14% of the standard value. The adjustment procedure should be repeated until the measurement stays within standard. After setting the sensor screws with paint, switch OFF the ignition and remove both the Toyota tester from DLC3 socket while also removing the throttle position sensor connector. The steps for installation should be performed in the opposite order of what was used for removal.
