2002 Toyota Prius Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the throttle body on 2002 Toyota Prius?
A: The throttle body service requires engine coolant draining followed by removing the air cleaner assembly and throttle body through disconnecting the throttle position sensor connector and throttle control motor connector and 2 PCV hoses and 2 water bypass hoses. Before continuing with the procedure it is necessary to remove the bolt along with 2 nuts then the accelerator bracket and ultimately the throttle body from the intake manifold. Make sure to apply the specified torque of 20 N.m (204 kgf.cm, 15 ft.lbf) to each component. Remove the throttle body gasket after this step. The backward removal sequence should be followed during the installation process. Replace the throttle position sensor without applying sudden force as this can degrade it while checking that foreign matter is not present because it could trigger gear locking. Install the throttle position sensor after removing its set screws and sensor then position the valve to an opening angle at 3.5 degrees. Start the sensor placement 15 degrees right from the indicated spot before rotating it counter-clockwise until contact with the throttle valve shaft then tighten the 2 set screws to 1.7 N.m (17.5 kgf.cm, 15 in.lbf). The throttle valve must operate between 14.8% and 0.8% based on manufacturer standards. The sensor should maintain its standard value after screw tightening. Assemble a screwdriver to achieve full throttle valve closure then verify that the opening percentage lies between 10 and 14%. Reapply these measurement adjustments until the target value becomes successful. Finish the process by painting the sensor set screws followed by turning off the ignition and detaching both the TOYOTA hand-held tester from DLC3 and the throttle position sensor connector.
