2003 Toyota Matrix Starter Motor Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to service and repair the starter motor on 2003 Toyota Matrix?
A: Start by removing the repair service starter kit through lead wire detachment and two screws removal from the starter housing. After that extract the kit and return spring and plunger. A screwdriver should be used to detach the starter commutator end frame cover. Snap ring pliers should be used to disassemble the starter commutator end frame assembly because they detach the snap ring and plate washer and remove the two through bolts to reveal the starter yoke assembly and commutator end frame assembly. Withdraw the starter armature configuration from the starter yoke assembly before detaching the three planetary gears. Check the starter armature assembly for a continuous connection between commutator segments with an ohmmeter. The armature should be replaced if the test shows no continuity. A continuity check between the commutator and armature coil core should be performed for proper evaluation of the armature. A failed measurement indicates it needs replacement. Sandpaper (No.400) or a lathe should be used to clean commutator surfaces while an indicator on V-blocks enables circle runout measurement limited to 0.05 mm (0.0020 inches). Verity the commutator length using vernier calipers to meet the required standard of 3.3 mm (0.1299 in.) but remaining below the maximum length of 4.0 mm (0.1575 in.). A continuous connection between positive and negative brush holders in the starter commutator end frame assembly requires assembly replacement, or repair must be performed on the assembly. Use calipers to measure the brush holder length because this dimension must be below 4.0 mm (0.0787 in.). Continual motion of the starter clutch pinion gear clockwise must be possible with counterclockwise locking and the gear teeth of the starter center bearing clutch sub-assembly must be free from damage and wear; replace the entire assembly when needed. The plunger must function correctly within the repair service starter kit. Additionally check the test continuity of the specified terminals between the pull-in and hold-in coils. If the kit shows any problems you should replace it. When engaging with repair actions apply grease to planetary gears along with pin components before you insert three planetary gears and position the plate cutout within the shock absorber protrusion. Install the starter armature plate with correct alignment after which you must add grease to the washer plate and armature shaft before placing the starter armature assembly. Install the plate washer with new snap ring using snap ring pliers according to specifications of 5.0 mm (0.1969 in.) maximum length. Dust and wipe the starter commutator end frame to prepare for reinstallation of the end frame cover while you line up the yoke assembly with the starter commutator end frame before securing it with two through bolts torqued to 6.0 N.m. After torquing the two through bolts securing the starter yoke assembly to 6.0 N.m (61 kgf.cm, 52 in.lbf) you can proceed with the repair service starter kit installation by adding grease to the plunger hook and hanging the plunger hook to the drive lever. Finally, install the plunger and return spring in place. Two screws should be used to secure the repair service starter kit while torquing them to 7.5 N.m (80 kgf.cm, 69 in.lbf). Lastly, apply grease to the lead wire nut before connecting it to the terminal and torquing it to 6.5 N.m (66 kgf.cm, 58 in.lbf).
