2003 Toyota Matrix Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to Replace an A/C Compressor and Magnetic Clutch on 2003 Toyota Matrix?
A: Engineers must begin the compressor and magnetic clutch replacement process by using Special Service Tool: 07110-58060 (07117-58080, 07117-58090, 07117-78050, 07117-88060, 07117-88070, 07117-88080) to eliminate refrigerant from the refrigeration system. The disconnect of refrigerant suction hose No.1 requires removing its bolt and O-ring when you cover the openings with vinyl tape to block moisture penetration. Disconnection of the discharge hose sub-assy begins with removing the bolt followed by the O-ring where all openings require sealing with vinyl tape. Unfasten the engine under cover RH, fan and generator V belt before disconnecting the connector and removing three bolts which hold the compressor and magnetic clutch in place. The process of magnet clutch assembly removal requires securing the compressor in a vise and using vise pliers to handle the magnet clutch hub which enables bolt removal along with hub separation from the washer. A snap ring expander will help you remove the snap ring and rotor before you disconnect the connector and separate the snap ring and starter unit. Install the magnet clutch assembly after matching the components while placing a new snap ring with its chamfered side facing upward then fasten the hub with the 18 N.m (183 kgf.cm, 13 ft.lbf) torque bolt. Use a dial indicator to check magnetic clutch clearance which must remain between 0.35-0.60 mm (0.013 - 0.023 in.) before possible adjustment with magnet clutch washers. For the new compressor installation drain the necessary oil amount which equals (120 + 15 cc (4.0 + 0.5 fl. oz.)) minus the existing oil quantity in the removed unit while using ND-OIL 8 compressor oil. Fitting the compressor and magnetic clutch requires torquing these parts to 29 N.m (295 kgf.cm, 21 ft.lbf) before connecting the connector. The discharge hose sub-assy installation requires a lubrication of the new O-ring with compressor oil before securing it with a bolt at a torque of 9.8 N.m (100 kgf.cm, 87 in.lbf). The same procedure must be followed when installing cooler refrigerant suction hose No.1 with accurate oil application (ND-OIL 8) and appropriate torque. The refrigerant charge process requires Special Service Tool: 07117-48130, 07117-48140, 07110-58060 (07117-58060, 07117-58070, 07117-58080, 07117-58090, 07117-78050, 07117-88060, 07117-88070, 07117-88080) to supply 470 plus or minus 30 g (17.28 plus or minus 1.06 oz.) of refrigerant while engine heating and leak detection follows.
