2002 Toyota Sienna Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the water pump on 2002 Toyota Sienna?
A: Service and repair of the water pump starts with draining engine coolant before moving on to eliminate the outer front cowl top panel assembly along with timing belt, camshaft timing pulleys, No. 2 idler pulley, and No. 3 timing belt cover. The procedure starts with unfastening the 4 bolts and 2 nuts which will allow you to pull out the water pump together with its gasket. The water pump needs visual inspection to check for coolant leakage through the drain hole. Water pump replacement becomes necessary if leakage occurs during inspection. A water pump replacement must be performed if the pulley rotation shows a heavy bearing noise or a lack of smooth movement. Check all components connected to the timing belt during the inspection process. Secure the position of the water pump by using new gaskets then install it into place through 4 bolts and 2 nuts while achieving a torque of 8.0 Nm (82 kgf-cm, 71 inch lbs.). Make sure to prevent oil from contacting the gasket. After the outer front cowl top panel installation proceed by attaching the No. 3 timing belt cover and No. 2 idler pulley and camshaft timing pulleys and timing belt. Engine coolant should be added followed by engine start-up before inspecting for leaks and testing engine coolant levels.
