2002 Toyota Sequoia Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to service and repair the rear differential carrier on 2002 Toyota Sequoia?
A: Service and repair operations on the rear differential carrier start with removing both rear wheels where you should tighten each bolt to 110 Nm (1,122 kgf-cm, 81 ft. lbs.). Workers should drain hypoid gear oil from under the same conditions of torque at 49 Nm (500 kgf-cm, 36 ft. lbs.). Follow the instructions on Special Service Tool: 09023-00100 to disconnect the brake lines by removing the clip with 15.5 Nm (158 kgf-cm, 11 ft. lbs.) torque and perform these steps again on the second side. Use a 105Nm torque while removing the 2 brake caliper bolts for each side before both calipers need removal. The next procedure requires removing the parking brake assembly by taking out two bolts before pulling the parking brake cable off the backing plate. Apply 8.0 Nm of torque (82 kgf-cm, 71 inch lbs.) to both sides. Remove the axle shafts by disassembling 4 nuts with 122 Nm torque (1,244 kgf-cm or 90 ft. lbs.) then draw out the axle shaft and detach the O-ring by handling the oil seal carefully and repeat the procedure on the other side. The pulley shaft gets ready for removal when you place matchmarks on the differential flange and propeller shaft but remove all 4 nuts with bolts and washers using 74 Nm (755 kgf-cm, 55 ft. lbs.) torque for both 2WD and 4WD conditions. Then secure the propeller shaft during separation. Secure the differential carrier assembly using 10 nuts as well as washers then remove it while confirming that the installation area remains undamaged by setting the output torque at 73 Nm (744 kgf-cm, 53 ft. lbs.). Also remove the gasket. Install a new gasket before assembling the differential carrier assembly together with 10 washers and nuts while paying attention to the installation surface to avoid damage at 73 Nm (740 kgf-cm, 54 ft. lbs.), then connect the rear propeller shaft followed by installing the rear axle shafts, and complete by filling the differential with hypoid gear oil.
