2002 Toyota Highlander Throttle Body Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair the Throttle Body on 2002 Toyota Highlander?
A: A proper initiation for servicing or repairing a throttle body starts by draining coolant from the system. Start the service by unclipping the MAF meter connector and wire clamp and disconnecting the VSV connector for the canister closed valve (CCV) along with air hose together with the air cleaner assembly. Then remove the 4 vacuum hoses and ventilation hose number 2. The air cleaner hose detachment from throttle body requires loosening the 2 clamp units while you can extract the air cleaner cap with hose along with the air filter and 3 air cleaner case fasteners. Proceed to remove the bolt which locks in place the throttle body bracket. A proper throttle body assembly removal requires disconnecting the accelerator cable while removing the bolt that separates the speed control cable with its bracket followed by vaporizing the brake booster vacuum hose, throttle position sensor connector, intake air control valve connector, 2 water bypass hoses, an air hose and the 4 vacuum hoses before separating the 3 nuts and removing the throttle body along with the gasket. The procedure to replace throttle body No.2 requires removal of first the 2 screws and cover followed by the 3 screws and throttle body No.2 then the vacuum hose installation avoided throttle opener adjustment or disassembly. Removal starts with disassembling the throttle body screws and proceeding with sensor removal by unscrewing its two fasteners. To proceed remove the throttle body idle speed control valve assembly after disconnecting its four screws. Place a new gasket together with throttle body idle speed control valve assembly then torque it to 3.7 N.m (38 kgf.cm, 32 in.lbf). The throttle position sensor installation requires a closed valve position where the sensor should be inserted counterclockwise at 30 to 60 degrees before clockwise rotation for final installation with a torque of 2 N.m (20 kgf.cm and 17 in.lbf). Procedure includes installing a new gasket combined with a new O-ring followed by the throttle body where torque specification needs 6.9 N.m (70 kgf.cm, 61 in.lbf) and then proceed with throttle body No.2 using a new gasket and O-ring which require 6.9 N.m (70 kgf.cm, 61 in.lbf) torque. The assembly requires a fresh gasket to install with a torque strength of 20 N.m (204 kgf.cm, 15 ft.lbf). The technician should reinstall the throttle body bracket while tightening it to 20 N.m (204 kgf.cm, 15 ft.lbf) followed by installing the air cleaner assembly and hose before securing the air cleaner case with 3 bolts torqued to 5 N.m (51 kgf.cm, 44 in.lbf). The last steps involve adding coolant before checking for any fluid leakage.
