2002 Toyota Highlander Power Steering Pump Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to Service and Repair a Power Steering Pump on 2002 Toyota Highlander?
A: Start power steering pump service and repair by eliminating the front wheel on the right-hand side and draining the power steering fluid and extracting both front fender liner RH and front fender apron seal RH. Use Service Tool 09249-63010 to untie the fan and generator V belt followed by disconnecting oil reservoir to pump hose No. 1 while removing its clip to prevent V belt fluid leaks. Disassemble the pressure feed tube assembly through a spanner (27 mm) procedure that maintains pressure port union stability while unfastening the union bolt and removing the gasket. Uninstall the vane pump assembly by disconnecting the oil pressure switch connector followed by bolt A loosening with Special Service Tool: 09249-63010 and a deep socket (14 mm) then finally extracting bolt B together with the vane pump assembly. The technician should start the disassembly process by removing the power steering suction port union and O-ring before moving on to remove the pressure port union and its O-ring and finally the flow control valve together with its compression spring and the power steering oil pressure switch while being cautious about droppage. Disconnect the vane pump housing rear by removing its 4 bolts with the O-ring and seize the w/pulley shaft sub-assembly after removing its snap ring and shaft. Proceed by eliminating the vane plates accompanied by the vane pump rotor before handling the vane pump cam ring and vane pump side plate front where O-rings must be detached from both components. A screwdriver with vinyl tape applied to its end will help you remove the vane pump housing oil seal without damaging the pump housing. The vane pump assembly needs replacement when the oil clearance measurement exceeds 0.07 mm (0.0028 inch) using a micrometer and caliper gauge but must remain between 0.021 - 0.043 mm (0.0008 - 0.0017 inch). Measure vane plate dimensions then check the groove-to-plate clearance because replacing the assembly must be done when the clearance exceeds 0.03 mm (0.0012 inch). Use power steering fluid to examine the flow control valve before testing its smooth insertion into the hole and performing compressed air leak detection; replace the assembly when leakage occurs. A measurement of the flow control valve compression spring's free length should be taken; replace the assembly if the minimum amount of 36.9 mm (1.453 inch) is not achieved. Any detected damage on the pressure port union indicates that the vane pump assembly needs replacement. The replacement of a new oil seal requires power steering fluid to coat its lip before installation using Special Service Tool: 09950-60010 (09951-00280) with 09950-70010 (09951-07100). The correct orientation must be maintained during installation. Place power steering fluid on new O-rings before inserting them to the pump housing front and side plate front while ensuring correct dent alignment. Position the vane pump cam ring with its inscribed mark toward the exterior before you install the w/pulley shaft sub-assembly then the vane pump rotor and ensure correct positioning of the vane plates and coat them appropriately. Fitting a new O-ring to the vane pump housing rear requires positioning of the straight pin to match its corresponding dents before bolting it into place at 22 Nm (220 kgf-cm, 16 ft. lbs.). The power steering vane pump rotation torque must fall under 0.27 Nm (2.8 kgf-cm, 2.4 inch lbs.) before installing the power steering oil pressure switch with its new O-ring using 21 Nm (215 kgf-cm, 15 ft. lbs.) torque. First install the liquid-coated flow control valve spring together with its flow control valve before mounting the pressure outlet joint with a fresh O-ring at 69 Nm (700 kgf-cm, 51 ft. lbs.) torque followed by attaching the power steering suction port with a new O-ring at a torque of 12 Nm (120 kgf-cm, 9 ft. lbs.). As the last step, install the vane pump assembly while tightening bolt A first before securing bolt B to a torque of 43 Nm (440 kgf-cm, 32 ft. lbs.) and finishing with a torque of 30 Nm (305 kgf-cm, 22 ft. lbs.) on bolt A using Special Service Tool: 09249-63010. The pressure feed tube assembly with gasket receives installation after connecting the oil pressure switch connector and torquing the union bolt to 51 Nm (520 kgf-cm, 38 ft. lbs.) while the stopper on the pump housing sub-assembly front makes contact with the tube sub-assembly. Use Special Service Tool: 09249-63010 to install the fan and generator V belt and reestablish the connection between the oil reservoir and pump hose No. 1. Afterward, secure the front fender apron seal RH and front fender liner RH and front wheel RH with torque values of 103 Nm (1,050 kgf-cm, 76 ft. lbs.). To complete the process bleed all power steering fluid while conducting leak inspections.
