2002 Toyota Corolla Control Arm Parts Q&A
Q: How to service and repair the rear control arm on 2002 Toyota Corolla?
A: Star the rear control arm service and repair process by taking off the rear wheel then tighten it to 103 Nm (1,050 kgf-cm, 76 ft. lbs.). Perform the pipe connection procedure starting with the exhaust front pipe to exhaust center pipe using 32 Nm (330 kgf-cm, 24 ft. lbs.) torque and finishing with the 19 Nm (195 kgf-cm, 14 ft. lbs.) torque for exhaust center pipe to exhaust tailpipe. The removal process of the strut rod requires the disassembly of its two bolts and nuts with 91 Nm (930 kgf-cm, 67 ft. lbs.) torque during installation stabilize the suspension before torquing the bolt (body side) and nut (carrier side). Start by detaching the No. 2 lower suspension arm from the suspension member by removing its nut and washer while applying 125 Nm torque before uninstalling the nut and washer along with the No. 2 lower suspension arm from the axle carrier using the same torque. The left-hand thread of the nut must be positioned toward the carrier side before installation while the suspension undergoes stabilization before torquing occurs. Use a jack to maintain the suspension member position while you remove the 6 bolts which need 74 Nm (760 kgf-cm, 55 ft. lbs.) together with 19 Nm (195 kgf-cm, 14 ft. lbs.) torque respectively from the suspension member. Then disconnect it from the axle carrier before lowering the suspension member to extract the bolt and washer and No. 1 lower suspension arm. You must start by loosening the 2 locking nuts while turning the adjustment tube until you can remove the lock nuts from the No. 2 lower suspension arm. The reassembling process includes installation of the 2 lock nuts followed by adjusting tube rotation until lengths A and B maintain equivalence within 3.0 mm (0.118 inch). Adjust the No. 2 lower suspension arm length to 502.0 plus or minus 1.5 mm (19.764 plus or minus 0.059 inch) and withhold temporary nut tightening. Permanent tightening must occur after wheel alignment adjustment to 56 Nm (570 kgf-cm, 41 ft. lbs.). Installation of the front shock absorber must be executed in the opposite order of removal and concerns a complete rear wheel alignment check.
