2002 Toyota Avalon Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the Neutral Safety Switch on 2002 Toyota Avalon?
A: Service and repair work on the Transmission Position Switch/Sensor requires starting with removal of the engine under cover. The park/neutral position switch installation requires connector detachment before uninstalling the switch through the process of removing cable shift control clip followed by control cable nut release and finally removing transaxle control shaft lever nut together with washer. A screwdriver allows you to remove the lock plate so you can remove the nut together with the lock plate and finally two bolts to fully extract the park/neutral position switch. The park/neutral position switch installation process begins by tightening the two bolts to 5.4 Nm (55 kgf-cm, 48 inch lbs.) after which a new lock plate joins with its nut which requires a torque of 6.9 Nm (70 kgf-cm, 61 inch lbs.). Finally, bend the lock plate claws to secure the nut. The installation requires you to mount the transaxle control shaft lever and washer followed by nut tightening to 15 Nm (150 kgf-cm, 11 ft. lbs.) then attach the control cable with a nut at the same torque value prior to installing the clip on the shift control cable. Test the engine start function by checking if it operates only when the shift lever is positioned in N or P. Perform the operation procedure if the start function is not working. The final step includes performing a vehicle test drive before reattaching the engine under cover.
