2001 Toyota Avalon Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the Neutral Safety Switch on 2001 Toyota Avalon?
A: The service and repair procedure for the Transmission Position Switch/Sensor requires starting with the removal of engine under cover. The service starts with disconnecting the park/neutral position switch connector followed by the removal of the switch through a three-step process including shift control cable clip removal and control cable, then control shaft lever nut removal. Use a screwdriver to disengage the lock plate from its position before removing the nut and plate and the two bolts which will lead to extraction of the park/neutral position switch. The park/neutral position switch requires installation using two bolts where torques reach 5.4 Nm (55 kgf-cm, 48 inch lbs.), followed by new lock plate and nut installation and torque up to 6.9 Nm (70 kgf-cm, 61 inch lbs.). Lastly, shape the lock plate claws to stake the nut. Install the transaxle control shaft lever and washer before tightening its nut to 15 Nm (150 kgf-cm, 11 ft. lbs.). Then install the control cable with its nut again secured to 15 Nm (150 kgf-cm, 11 ft. lbs.), and finally place the clip on the shift control cable. Recheck the engine starting operation by reattaching the park/neutral position switch connector. Proceed with the adjustment procedure if the engine starts with shift levers in any position apart from N or P. The last procedure includes driving the vehicle to check its performance while reinstalling the engine protection cover.
