2002 Toyota 4Runner Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to service and repair the wheel bearing on 2002 Toyota 4Runner?
A: The repair process starts by detaching the wheel bearing components. Secure the axle hub in a soft jaw vise without excessively tightening its clamp. The necessary step to service 2WD uses a screwdriver for grease cap removal but 4WD requires screwdriver usage on the internal oil seal. The axle hub disconnection from the steering knuckle requires 4 bolt removal followed by moving the brake dust cover toward the outside. Special Service Tools 09710-30021 / 09710-03051 and 09950-40011 with attachments 09951-04020, 09952-04010, 09953-04020, 09954-04010, 09955-04031, 09957-04010, and 09958-04011 are needed to detach the axle hub followed by the bearing spacer and ABS speed sensor rotor/spacer. The oil seal can be removed from its outside by a screwdriver followed by popping out the bearing from the steering knuckle by using snap ring pliers and Special Service Tool: 09950-60020 (09951-00810) or 09950-70010 (09951-07150) with a press. Special Service Tools: 09527-17011 and 09950-60020 (09951-00910) and a press must be used to install a new bearing followed by new snap ring installation using snap ring pliers. You must install a new oil seal (outside) utilizing Special Service Tool: 09223-15030, 09527-17011 and a plastic hammer while applying MP grease to the oil seal lip. Fasten the 4 bolts of the brake dust cover to the steering knuckle at 18 Nm (185 kgf-cm, 13 ft. lbs.) torque level before installing the axle hub using Special Service Tool: 09649-17010 and a press. At first carefully set the ABS speed sensor rotor/spacer into place without damaging its serration then proceed by setting the bearing spacer using Special Service Tools: 09950-60010 (09951-00650), 09950-70010 (09951-07150) together with a press. The grease cap installation applies to 2WD whereas 4WD requires a new oil seal (inside) which should be set using Special Service Tool: 09527-17011 and a plastic hammer combined with MP grease on the oil seal lip.
