2001 Toyota Tacoma Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the alternator on 2001 Toyota Tacoma?
A: Service and repair of the alternator requires starting with rear end cover removal through unfastening of the nut and terminal insulator and the subsequent three nuts and end cover removal. The brush holder and voltage regulator need to be removed after unscrewing their 5 screws. Use a screwdriver to take out the rectifier holder after you remove its bolt and 4 screws. Install SST (A) under torque wrench control then twist SST (B) clockwise to 39 N.m (400 kgf.cm, 29 ft.lbf) before checking that SST (A) remains secure to the rotor shaft. Suspend SST (C) in a vise position while fitting the generator to SST (C) then loosen the pulley nut with SST (A) by following the direction labels without surpassing a half turn to protect the rotor shaft. The generator should be pulled away from SST (C). Next use SST (B) to turn and separate SST (A and B) before you can remove the pulley nut along with the pulley. Begin plunging the rectifier end frame by removing its four screws while using SST 09286-46011 as a tool for detachment. The drive end frame must go over the pulley first while the rotor should then be adapted to the drive end frame after which you should install the rectifier end frame through application of a generator washer onto the rotor followed by a 29 mm socket wrench press to secure it with 4 nuts at 4.5 N.m (46 kgf.cm, 40 in.lbf). Hands should tighten the pulley nut before using a torque wrench to tighten SST (A) to 39 N.m (400 kgf.cm, 29 ft.lbf) for SST (A) properly fastened to the pulley shaft. SST (C) requires mounting in a vise until the generator receives proper installation on SST (C). Generator pulley nut torque should reach 110 N.m (1,125 kgf.cm, 81 ft.lbf) before the generator removal from SST (C) and separation of SST (A and B). Mount the rectifier holder by attaching the bolt and 4 screws where each fastener needs 1.96 N.m (20 kgf.cm, 17.4 in.lbf) torque for the screws yet a 3.9 N.m (40 kgf.cm, 34.7 in.lbf) torque for the bolt. Secure the voltage regulator by placing it horizontally on the rectifier end frame then install five screws until the brush holder stands 1 mm (0.04 in.) from the connector while torquing to 1.96 N.m (20 kgf.cm, 17.4 in.lbf). Connect the rear end cover through three nuts torqued to 4.5 N.m (46 kgf.cm, 40 in.lbf) and the terminal insulator with its nut screwed to 4.1 N.m (42 kgf.cm, 36 in.lbf) while verifying free rotor movement. When installing new brushes run the wire of replacement parts through the brush holder and spring before inserting both elements together. Solder the wire to surface from 9.5 to 11.5 mm (0.374 to 0.453 in.) of the brush. Check for proper movement and trim the wire before applying insulation paint. The front bearing replacement process involves first removing 4 screws and bearing retainer and bearing before employing SST 09950-60010 (09951-00260, 09952-06010) to extract the bearing while SST 09950-60010 (09951-00500) presses in a new bearing which must be secured with 4 screws at 2.6 N.m (26.5 kgf.cm, 23 in.lbf). First remove the rear bearing with SST tools and then install the bearing cover in position before inserting a new bearing with SST tool 09820-00030 and finally install the outside bearing cover with tool SST 09285-76010.
