2001 Toyota RAV4 Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to service and repair the rear Sway Bar Kit on 2001 Toyota RAV4?
A: Before the sway bar kit maintenance process begins you must remove the fuel tank. Start by extracting the sway bar links through the process of removing their 2 nuts and link and tightening them to 44 Nm (450 kgf-cm, 32 ft. lbs.). When the nut allows ball joint rotation apply a 5 mm hexagon wrench to fix the stud. The sway bar kit requires this same method to be used also on its opposite side. The sway bar kit removal requires removal of two bolts and bracket and bushing followed by applying torque of 19 Nm (190 kgf-cm, 14 ft. lbs.) before performing the same steps on the opposite side to remove the sway bar kit. Position the cutout section of the bushing downward during installation while allowing it to face inside the paint line. Before attaching the sway bar link ball joint nut, inspect the rotation condition of the ball joint by rotating the stud five times while checking the sway bar link ball joint for rotation condition. Apply continuous rotations of the nut for 2 to 4 seconds per turn using a torque wrench while measuring the torque on the 5th turn to achieve 0.05 to 1.0 Nm (0.5 to 10 kgf-cm, 0.4 to 8.7 inch lbs. of turning torque. Installation follows the reverse steps that were used for removal.
