2001 Toyota RAV4 Sway Bar Kit Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to service and repair the Sway Bar Kit on 2001 Toyota RAV4?
A: Begin sway bar kit service and repair by removing sway bar links through the process of taking off 2 nuts and sway bar link and applying a torque of 44 Nm (450 kgf-cm, 32 ft. lbs.). The hexagon (5 mm) wrench will be required if the ball joint moves when workers interact with the nut. To secure the stud when the ball joint rotates with the nut apply a hexagon (5 mm) wrench. The process should also be performed on the sway bar links on the other side of the vehicle. Remove the sway bar kit by taking off its 2 bolts and bracket along with bushing then apply 29 Nm (300 kgf-cm, 22 ft. lbs.) torque before moving on to the other side for removal. Position the bushing with its cutout towards the rear side when performing installation and keep the bushing sanctuary outside of the bushing stopper. The ball joint stud requires 5 cycles of forward and backward rotation before the nut installation to perform a torque wrench check that should produce readings between 0.05 Nm -1.0 Nm (0.5 kgf-cm - 10 kgf-cm, 0.4 inch lbs. - 8.7 inch lbs.). When inspecting the sway bar bushings check for cracks because replacement may be needed. Engineers should follow the opposite sequence during sway bar kit installation.
