2001 Toyota Prius Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the Sway Bar Kit on 2001 Toyota Prius?
A: The first step for sway bar kit service and repair requires the removal of front vehicle wheels. The procedure starts with disconnecting sway bar links through a process of removing 4 nuts and 2 bar links and torquing them at 74 Nm (755 kgf-cm, 55 ft. lbs.). A 5 mm hexagon wrench should be used to grasp the stud when the ball joint moves with the nut. Traverse to remove the front suspension member with its lower suspension arm before extracting the sway bar kit through the removal of its 4 bolts and 2 brackets together with 2 bushings at a torque of 19 Nm (195 kgf-cm, 14 ft. lbs.). Cut off the sway bar kit which exists on the left-hand side of the vehicle. The ball joint rotation condition should be checked after rotating the ball joint stud for 5 cycles before attaching the nut. In order to achieve a turning torque between 0.05 and 1.0 Nm (0.5 to 10 kgf-cm or 0.4 to 8.7 inch lbs.) the nut should be turned at a rate of 2 - 4 seconds for every full turn using a torque wrench until the 5th turn is reached. The installation process should be performed in the opposite order of disassembly procedures and drivers must inspect wheel alignment after assembly.
