2001 Toyota MR2 Spyder Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to Service and Repair a Shock Absorber on 2001 Toyota MR2 Spyder?
A: The service procedure for the suspension strut starts with dismounting the rear wheel while applying a torque of 103 Nm (1,050 kgf-cm, 76 ft. lbs.). Proceed by first disconnecting the stabilizer bar link through nut removal with a torque of 44 Nm (449 kgf-cm, 32 ft. lbs.) and apply a 5 mm hexagon wrench to stabilize the stud when the ball joint rotates with the nut. The shock absorber flexible hose requires removal using a 29 Nm torque value when removing the bolt. Begin by applying torque of 173 Nm (1,765 kgf-cm, 128 ft. lbs.) to both lower side nuts on the shock absorber before removing its two bolts and two nuts. The shock absorber should be disconnected from the suspension upper brace on the upper side by removing its 3 nuts using a torque of 80 Nm (816 kgf-cm, 59 ft. lbs.). The next task is to remove the two nuts and two bolts along with four washers located on the lower side of the structure while applying engine oil on the thread of each nut before installation. To finish the procedure remove both the shock absorber combined with coil spring together with the suspension support cover. Rear wheel alignment assessment should be conducted after finished installation which follows the opposite sequence of removal steps.
