- Q: How to replace the water pump on 2001 Toyota Highlander?A: The replacement process for the water pump starts with coolant draining followed by generator assembly removal [27020 / 98-35] and water pump pulley removal [16173 / 98-19] using Special Service Tool: 09960-10010 (09962-01000, 09963-00700). The subsequent step is disconnecting the crankshaft position sensor wire harness clamp. The water pump assembly removal process starts by removing 4 bolts and 2 nuts and the bracket [16100 / 98-19]. The contact surface must be cleaned of all FIPG packing material before adding seal packing (Part No. 08826-00080 or equivalent) to the water pump and finishing installation within 5 minutes after seal application while keeping the engine oil away for 2 hours after installation. Install the water pump and bracket by using 4 bolts along with 2 nuts while tightening to 9.0 Nm (92 kgf-cm, 80 inch lbs.) before restating the crankshaft position sensor wire harness clamp. Install the water pump pulley [16173 / 98-19] through 4 bolts using Special Service Tool: 09960-10010 (09962-01000, 09963-00700). Torque these bolts to a value of 26 Nm (265 kgf-cm, 19 ft. lbs.). The last step includes coolant addition and leak inspection.
