- Q: How to replace the oil cooler on 2001 Toyota Highlander?A: Draining coolant should start any oil cooler replacement process which requires the removal of oil filter sub-assembly [15601 / 98-16] using Special Service Tool: 09228-06501. The first step begins by disconnecting two water by-pass hoses followed by removing the nut and using a socket wrench (30 mm) to detach the union from the oil cooler assembly [15710 / 98-18]. The first step is to remove the oil cooler together with its O-ring. After putting a fresh O-ring onto the oil cooler it needs an application of engine oil. To install the oil cooler containing the union use the 30-mm socket wrench to perform commands where the torque should reach 79 Nm (800 kgf-cm, 58 ft. lbs.). Following this, tighten the nut to 9.0 Nm (92 kgf-cm, 80 inch lbs.). Perform a final examination for both oil and coolant leaks.
