  • Q: How to Replace the Clock Spring Sub Assembly in a Steering Wheel on 2001 Toyota Highlander?
A: First you need to turn off power at the battery and position the front wheels directly ahead before replacing the Clock Spring Sub Assembly. Take off the two Steering Wheel Cover Lower No.2 parts [45186/98-75] and then detach the Horn Button Assy [45130/98-75] and Steering Wheel Assy [45100/98-75] with Special Service Tool 0995-50012 (09951-5010, 09952-5010, 09953-5020, 0995-5020). Unscrew the three screws to take off the Steering Column Cover Lower. Slide off the column upper cover and unplug both connectors from the clock spring to access the three claws for removal. Check the Clock Spring Sub-Assy [84306/98-1621] for damage like scratches, cracks, dents, or chipping and replace it all defects are present. Place the new Clock Spring Sub-Assy [84306-98-162] inside the steering column when the turn signal switch is in neutral mode using the three claws to fix it. Then connect the Air Bag connector and secure the steering column lower cover using its three screws. Install clock spring perfectly by testing the ignition switch OFF and unplugging the negative battery terminal for 90 seconds to align marks when you turn it counterclockwise to feel resistance then clockwise until the marks match. After installing the Steering Wheel Assy [45100/98-75] at 35 N.m torque measure steering wheel position and fit the Horn Button Assy [45130/98-75] components while testing the SRS warning light.
