2001 Toyota Highlander Clock Spring Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to Replace the Clock Spring Assembly on 2001 Toyota Highlander?
A: Start the Clock Spring Assembly replacement by taking safety measures and disconnecting the negative terminal of the battery. Position the front wheels directly in a straight ahead direction before you take away both the steering wheel cover lower No.2 (45186/ 98-75) and the horn button assembly (45130 / 98-75). Separate the steering wheel assembly [45100 / 98-75] through Tool 0995-50012 (09951-5010, 09952-5010, 09953-5020, 0995-5020) and proceed to remove the steering column cover lower by untightening the 3 screws. Start by sliding the column upper cover before disconnecting the Air Bag connector and the connector from the clock spring. Then use a tool to release the 3 claws to remove the clock spring sub-assembly [84306/98-162]. The clock spring sub-assembly [84306 / 98-1621] needs replacement if inspectors detect scratches, cracks, dents or chipping. The new clock spring sub-assembly [84306/98-162] gets installation with front wheels held straight by starting at the neutral position of the turn signal switch while engaging the 3 claws and connecting the Air Bag connector before reinstalling the steering column lower cover with its 3 screws. Begin the cable centering process when the vehicle has its ignition switch off and its battery negative terminal disconnected for 90 seconds. Then turn the cable counterwise until it meets initial resistance before rotating it clockwise 2.5 times to match the marks. Installation of the steering wheel assembly [45100 / 98-75] should be done with 35 N.m (360 kgf.cm, 26 ft.lbf) torque before you inspect the steering wheel center point and add the horn button assembly [45130/ 98-75] while inspecting it and checking the SRS warning light.
