2001 Toyota Echo Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service the thermostat on 2001 Toyota Echo?
A: Before servicing the thermostat one must drain engine coolant from the system. The service process begins by removing the water inlet from the cylinder block after disconnecting the clamp from the wire harness and taking out the 2 nuts. Inspection of the thermostat requires water immersion while heating it slowly for temperature testing of the valve opening pressure between 80 - 84 degrees Celsius (176 - 183 degrees Fahrenheit); replace the unit if the specification is not met. The thermostat replacement is necessary if the valve lift measures less than 8.5 mm (0.345 inch) at 93 degrees Celsius (199 degrees Fahrenheit) or if the valve does not close completely when the temperature drops to 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit). When installing the thermostat it requires a freshly placed gasket followed by proper positioning of the upward-facing jiggle valve that should be within 10 degrees of the correct setting. After attaching the water inlet with its two nuts you should reconnect the wire harness but make sure to tighten it at 9.0 Nm (90 kgf-cm, 80 inch lbs.). Guarantee that the vehicle operates at temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit) before engineering the system with engine coolant to start the engine with leak detection checks.
