2002 Toyota Echo Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair a thermostat on 2002 Toyota Echo?
A: Service and repair of the thermostat requires users to drain engine coolant first. Following wire harness clamp separation from the water inlet the technician will remove the 2 nuts to disconnect the water inlet from the cylinder block before removing the thermostat along with its gasket. The thermostat needs to be checked by submerging it in water while heating it until the valve opens between 80 - 84 degrees Celsius (176 - 183 degrees Fahrenheit). Any thermostat not reaching this specification must be replaced. A professional should measure the valve lift of the thermostat which should extend to 8.5 mm (0.345 inch) at 93 degrees Celsius (199 degrees Fahrenheit) and demonstrate full valve closure when the temperature falls below 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit). Decline replacement if either condition does not meet requirements. To install the thermostat use a new gasket before setting it into place with the jiggle valve oriented upward along an acceptable 10 degrees range. The water inlet installation requires two nuts and wire harness connection after which ensure a torque of 9.0 Nm (90 kgf-cm, 80 inch lbs.). The system should be filled with engine coolant before starting the engine to verify coolant leakages.
