2001 Toyota Corolla Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the radiator on 2001 Toyota Corolla?
A: Service and repair of the radiator requires starting with engine coolant drain followed by engine under cover removal. The service starts with disconnecting the NO.1 and NO.2 electric cooling fan connectors followed by upper and lower radiator hoses and the radiator reservoir hose and A/T :2 oil cooler hoses. Then remove the 2 bolts securing the upper radiator supports to free the radiator assembly together with the 2 lower radiator supports. The electric cooling fan needs to be taken out of the radiator by removing its 5 connecting bolts. To perform disassembly the drain plug and O-ring must be removed before assembling Special Service Tool: 09230-01010 with the claw attached to the overhaul handle while adjusting the stopper bolts to produce a dimension between 0.2 and 0.3mm (0.008 to 0.012 inches). Lightly strike the radiator bracket with this tool while using it to remove lock plates and the tank along with its O-ring. The A/T (DENSO Made) requires removal of the lower tank oil cooler by unfastening two nuts and two plate washers before checking the lock plate for any damage and correcting deformation to prevent water leakage. The radiator receives two caulking applications only before core replacement becomes necessary. Reassemble the lower tank with the oil cooler by installing two new O-rings followed by attachment with two plate washers and two nuts which should be torqued up to 8.34 Nm (85 kgf-cm, 74 inch lbs.). The installation of new O-rings and tanks must include a check for foreign objects in the lock plate groove before tapping the lock plate with a soft-faced hammer until gaps disappear. The Special Service Tools 09230-01010 and 09231-14010 require adjustment of the stopper bolt to 8.4 mm (0.331 inch) before completing the lock plate caulking process. Check the height afterward to fall between 7.40 - 7.80 mm (0.2913 - 0.3071 inch). The installation process includes using Special Service Tool: 09230-01010 to seal the inlet and outlet pipes before applying pressure from a radiator cap tester until it reaches 177 kPa (1.8 kgf/cm2, 26 psi), while the radiator remains submerged in water to check for any fluid loss. The installation process begins with attaching the electric cooling fan through 5 bolts that require 6 Nm (60 kgf-cm, 53 inch lbs.) torque setting. Afterward, install the radiator assembly where the 2 lower radiator supports need to connect with body brackets and the 2 upper supports require 2 bolts torqued to 13 Nm (130 kgf-cm, 9 ft. lbs.) with a confirmation of proper rubber cushion (A) positioning. Install the A/C condenser using 4 bolts before connecting the upper and lower radiator hoses and radiator reservoir hose and A/T 2 oil cooler hoses along with the both electric cooling fan connectors. The engine under covers can be replaced and then engine coolant can be filled in while conducting tests for any leaks that might appear during engine start-up.
