2001 Toyota Corolla Alternator Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to service and repair the alternator on 2001 Toyota Corolla?
A: Service and repair of the alternator starts with removing the rear end cover after taking off the nut and terminal insulator and then unfastening the bolt and 3 nuts along with the plate terminal and end cover. Start by removing the brush holder and voltage regulator through the brush holder cover followed by the five screws and proceeding to remove both components. Lastly separate the seal plate from the rectifier end frame. Start by unscrewing all 4 screws on the rectifier holder before detaching it and removing its 4 rubber insulators. Secure the pulley through torque wrench application of Special Service Tool 09820-63010 to the rotor shaft by following a tight socket clockwise motion until reaching 39 Nm (400 kgf.cm, 29 ft.lbf). Mount the adapter in a vise before placing the socket inside while connecting the pulley nut followed by a counterclockwise tool rotation which should be limited to prevent rotor shaft damage. Take off the generator from its adapter by first removing the socket and pulley holding tool before unthreading the pulley nut and pulley. Shift the rectifier end frame by disassembling its 4 nuts and wire clip then employ Special Service Tool 09286-46011 for frame separation before removing the generator washer from the rotor. To install the rotor into the drive end frame begin by placing the rectifier end frame onto the pulley followed by positioning the rotor. Insert the generator washer onto the rotor before securing the rectifier end frame by using a 29 mm socket wrench and press to slowly tighten it with wire clip and 4 nuts while torquing Nut A to 4.5 N.m (46 kg.cm, 40 in.lb) and Nut B to 5.4 N.m (55 kg.cm, 48 in.lb). Insert the pulley nut tightly by hand before using the pulley holding tool with a torque wrench to clockwise tighten the socket at 39 N.m (400 kg.cm, 29 ft.lb) while maintaining proper tool connection to the pulley shaft. After inserting the socket into the vise adapter position the pulley nut and proceed with a 111 N.m (1,132 kg.cm at 82 ft.lb) torque until the generator can be removed from the adapter. Start by installing the rectifier holder through wire lead placement onto the 4 rubber insulators before screwing the holder in and torquing screws to 2.9 N.m (30 kg.cm, 26 in.lb). First install the seal plate to the rectifier end frame followed by both the voltage regulator and brush holder while ensuring correct direction placement then complete with 5 screws torqued at 2.0 N.m (20 kg.cm, 18 in.lb). Finally install the brush holder cover on. To complete the installation insert the end cover with the plate terminal and bolt while torquing bolts to 4.4 N.m (45 kg.cm, 39 in.lb) and nuts to 4.1 N.m (42 kg.cm, 36 in.lb) and install the terminal insulator with torquing nut to 4.1 N.m (42 kg.cm, 36 in.lb). The rotor must spin without any mechanical impediments.
