2001 Toyota Celica Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the starter motor on 2001 Toyota Celica?
A: The first step for starter motor repair and servicing consists of field frame with armature extraction from magnetic switch assembly by disconnecting lead wire from magnetic switch terminal followed by through bolt removal and finally end cover cleansing from field frame. You need to start by taking the ring out of the field frame and while using a screwdriver for tang spring support to detach the brush from the brush holder before disconnecting the 4 brushes and taking off the brush holder. Before removing the field frame from the magnetic switch assembly separate it from the O-ring. The procedure begins with extracting the two bolts (Torque: 5.9 N.m (60 kgf.cm, 52 in.lbf)) from the starter housing and clutch assembly and their gears before taking out the starter housing, idler gear, bearing, clutch assembly and return spring from the magnetic switch assembly. A magnetic finger tool should be used to extract the steel ball from the clutch shaft opening. The armature requires removal from the magnetic switch assembly of the 1ZZ-FE model or needs to undergo pressing for the 2ZZ-GE model. The reassembly process must include high-temperature grease application for lubricating both bearings and gears. Install the armature to the magnetic switch assembly by placing the front bearing ring projection correctly for 2ZZ-GE while performing armature bearing greasing. Place the lubricated steel ball into the clutch shaft hole and follow by applying grease to the return spring before inserting it into the magnetic switch hole. Insert the starter housing onto the magnetic switch by using 2 screws while tightening them to 9.3 N.m (95 kgf.cm, 82 in.lbf). The starter assembly should receive a new O-ring which must fit into the field frame groove after proper alignment between the field frame protrusion and magnetic switch groove. The field frame can now be installed. Put the brush holder onto the field frame before applying screwdriver magic to hold back the brush spring to make contact between the brushes where positive lead wires must avoid contact with ground. Install a new O-ring in the groove of the field frame while fastening the end cover with 2 screws (Torque: 3.8 N.m (39 kgf.cm, 34 in.lbf)) before tightening 2 through bolts (Torque: 9.3 N.m (95 kgf.cm, 82 in.lbf)) to secure the field frame and armature assembly. Attach the terminal C lead wire using a nut which should be tightened to 5.9 N.m (60 kgf.cm, 52 in.lbf) before adding a new dust protector. The bearing replacement procedure starts with manual bearing rotation under inward force pressure. When resistance occurs, install replacement bearings through Special Service Tool: 09286-46011. Insert the new front bearing into place using Special Service Tool: 09820-00030 installed within a press device. Afterward, insert the new rear bearing. Check the contact plate wear by measuring depth with calipers until maximum measure reaches 0.9 mm (0.035 in.) and replace if needed. Use Service Tool: 09810-38140 to loosen terminal nuts before taking out the components connected to terminal C and terminal 30. The new terminal 30 kit components require temporary installation with proper orientation of the terminal insulator before installing terminal C kit parts correctly. You must use a hand press with wooden block placed on the contact plate to tighten the terminal nuts. This tool should have dimensions of 20 x 37 x 40 mm (0.79 x 1.46 x 1.57 in.) with a specific press force of 981 N (100 kgf, 221 lbf). Follow up by tightening the nuts using the following torque setting (Torque: 17 N.m (173 kgf.cm, 12 ft.lbf)) while avoiding excessive force. Secure the magnetic switch end cover by installing its plunger along with the new gasket and end cover through three bolts which require 2.5 N.m (26 kgf.cm, 23 in.lbf).
