- Q: How to service the oil cooler on 2001 Toyota Camry?A: Service begins with draining engine coolant before proceeding to detach the oil filter and oil cooler through removal of water bypass hose connections and clearance of union bolt with plate washer and nut and oil cooler while extracting its O-ring from the cooler. The oil cooler needs visual analysis for damage and clogging before a replacement can be made. First clean the mounting surface for the oil cooler then place a new O-ring onto the cooler before installing it with the nut. Use engine oil for a thin layer on the union bolt threads and under its head before placing the plate washer then bolt followed by torquing to 78.5 Nm (800 kgf-cm, 58 ft. lbs.) then nut torquing to 9.0 Nm (92 kgf-cm, 80 inch lbs.). The water bypass hoses must be attached to the oil cooler before installing the oil filter and filling with engine coolant which activates the system to check for leaks and measure correct engine oil level.
