2001 Toyota Camry Alternator Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to service and repair the alternator on 2001 Toyota Camry?
A: Service and repair of the alternator starts by taking apart these components: first remove the rear end cover by extracting its nut followed by the terminal insulator and then unfastening the bolt and 3 nuts and plate terminal and end cover. First detach the brush holder and voltage regulator by starting with brush holder cover removal then unscrewing 5 screws and removing the brush holder followed by the voltage regulator until the seal plate becomes available from the rectifier end frame. The rectifier holder requires removal by first unfastening the five screws and then extracting each rubber insulator. Special Service Tool 09820-63010 allows you to hold the pulley while applying torque through a wrench that reaches 39 Nm (400 kgf.cm, 29 ft.lbf) before rusting the socket onto the rotor shaft. Mount the adapter into a vise before socket insertion followed by pulley nut attachment and counterclockwise loosening without exceeding half a turn to safeguard the rotor shaft. Next, detach the generator from its adapter position and next remove the pulley holding tool and socket and separate pulley nut and pulley from each other. Use Special Service Tool 09286-46011 to detach the rectifier end frame whereas 4 nuts and a wire clip need removing first. Finally, remove the generator washer from the rotor. During reinstallation begin by attaching the rotor to drive end hardware by first resting the rectifier end frame on the pulley and then adding the rotor. Use a 29 mm socket wrench to press slowly the rectifier end frame into position after placing the generator washer onto the rotor, subsequently fasten the assembly using the wire clip and four nuts while torquing Nut A to 4.5 N.m (46 kgf.cm, 40 in.lbf) and Nut B to 5.4 N.m (55 kgf.cm, 48 in.lbf). Connect the pulley using hand tightness and use Special Service Tool 09820-63010 to apply a clockwise torque of 111 N.m at the pulley shaft while securing the tool to the shaft. The rectifier holder demands four rubber insulators during installation according to the proper orientation before screw attachment with torques adjusted to 2.9 N.m (30 kgf.cm, 26 in.lbf). Begin by mounting the rectifier end frame with the seal plate followed by installing the voltage regulator and brush holder by using 5 screws with a torque of 2.0 N.m (20 kgf.cm, 18 in.lbf). Afterwards place the brush holder cover on top of the brush holder. The last step involves mounting the rear end cover through its end cover and plate terminal connection using a bolt and 3 nuts and performing torque adjustments to 4.4 N.m (45 kgf.cm, 39 in.lbf) for the nut and 3.9 N.m (39 kgf.cm, 35 in.lbf) for the bolt before installing the terminal insulator with a nut torque of 4.1 N.m (42 kgf.cm, 36 in.lbf) as the rotor should rotate without resistance. The replacement process for the front bearing requires users to remove 4 screws and the bearing retainer and bearing before applying a socket wrench to press out the bearing. Special Service Tool 09950-60010 (09951-00500) should then be used to press in the new bearing which is followed by bearing retainer reinstallation through 4 screws torqued to 3.0 N.m (31 kgf.cm, 27 in.lbf). Use Special Service Tool 09820-00021 to extract the bearing cover (outside) and bearing while taking protection measures for the fan then pull off the bearing cover (inside), position it on the rotor, before pressing in a new bearing with Special Service Tool 09820-00030 and move forward with bearing cover (outside) insertion by Special Service Tool 09285-76010.
