2000 Toyota Tundra Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to Properly Remove and Install a Timing Belt on 2000 Toyota Tundra?
A: The first step for timing belt removal includes removing engine under cover while draining engine coolant and removing the radiator assembly. Start by unmounting the throttle body cover and intake air connector assembly then continue with the drive belt followed by the removal of fan assembly with fluid coupling and fan pulley through nut loosening of the 4 points that hold the fluid coupling to the fan bracket. Securely suspend the PS pump after removing its 3 bolts for disconnecting it. Start by detaching the drive belt idler pulley through the removal of its pulley bolt and cover plate followed by the idler pulley itself. Start by removing the 3 bolts and nut from the RH No.3 timing belt cover and then move to the LH No.3 timing belt cover where engine wire detachment from 2 wire clamps is needed before removing 4 bolts and a nut and disconnecting the camshaft position sensor wire and connector and ultimately taking out the cover and its bolt and nut alongside the oil cooler pipe. You must unbolt the No.2 timing belt cover through the removal of two fasteners before removing the A/C compressor when necessary and then taking out the fan bracket using two bolts and two nuts. Examine the crankshaft pulley through rotation to find three installation marks; add new marks in case any are missing before extracting it. Use the Special Service Tools: 09213-70010 (90100-08076), 09330-00021 to loosen the crankshaft pulley bolt until you reach the position where No.1 cylinder points to TDC/compression by lining up the crankshaft pulley groove with timing mark "0" of the No.1 timing belt cover while the camshaft timing pulleys and timing belt rear plates maintain proper alignment. Begin by unbolted the crankshaft pulley without rotating it before detaching the timing belt tensioner while applying new installation marks on the timing belt when reusing it. You must utilize Special Service Tool: 09960-10010 (09962-01000, 09963-01000) to disconnect the timing belt from camshaft timing pulleys after first loosening their tension spring. Subsequently, use the same tool to remove the camshaft timing pulleys. Use Special Service Tool: 09950-50012 (09951-05010, 09952-05010, 09953-05010, 09953-05020, 09954-05010) to remove the generator as well as drive belt tensioner and crankshaft pulley while preventing crankshaft pulley rotation. You should first remove the No.1 timing belt cover and timing belt guide along with the timing belt cover spacer before taking out the timing belt. Also install a new reference point when planning to reuse. Proceed with the removal of No.1 idler pulley and No.2 idler pulley using a 10 mm hexagon wrench before using Special Service Tool: 09950-50012 (09951-05010, 09952-05010, 09953-05010, 09953-05020, 09954-05010) to extract the crankshaft timing pulley. Keep the crankshaft timing pulley from turning during this process. The inspection of the timing belt must show no bends and twists while keeping away from oil, water, or steam. Inspect the idler pulleys and timing belt tensioner for oil leakage while maintaining smooth operation. To install the crankshaft timing pulley first use Special Service Tool: 09223-46011 to lock it into the key groove before inserting the tool. Run adhesive onto the pivot bolts of No.1 and No.2 idler pulleys before installing them carefully to achieve proper movement. Install the timing belt provisionally keeping the engine at room temperature while cleaning all pulleys before ensuring that the installation mark on the belt matches the crankshaft timing pulley position. After spacer and guide installation, the technician should place the No.1 timing belt cover into position. Use Special Service Tool: 09223-06011 to install the crankshaft pulley by aligning the set key prior to tapping it into its position. Place the drive belt tensioner followed by tightening it to the proper torque specification before generator attachment. Verify that the crankshaft pulley stands at the correct position adjacent to the timing mark "0" of the No.1 timing belt cover. Proper alignment and torque measurements need to be followed while installing RH and LH camshaft timing pulleys. Both clean camshaft timing pulleys require a timing belt connection followed by setting the timing belt tensioner through hexagon wrench operation on the push rod when pressed inward. First position the timing belt tensioner then alternate the bolt tightening process followed by verification of valve timing using crankshaft pulley turning and timing mark alignment check. Use Special Service Tool: 09213-54015 (90119-08216), 09330-00021 to tighten the crankshaft pulley bolt before installing the fan bracket according to the specified torque. The installation process requires the A/C compressor along with the No.2 timing belt cover and both the RH and LH No.3 timing belt cover assemblies. Each component must be properly connected and wired. After securing both the drive belt idler pulley and PS pump along with the fan pulley, fan, fluid coupling and drive belt start by reinstalling the intake air connector assembly and throttle body cover and radiator assembly before filling with engine coolant and beginning engine operation for leak detection followed by engine coolant level recheck before placing the engine under cover.
